Ann-Margaret Esnard, PH.D.

Dr. Ann-Margaret Esnard is an associate professor in the School of Urban and Regional Planning (SURP). Prior to 2005, she was a faculty member at Cornell University for 8 years. Her research expertise encompasses GIS/spatial analysis, coastal vulnerability assessment, population displacement from hurricanes, disaster planning, and land use planning. She has published a variety of books, book chapters and journal articles on these topics. Esnard has also designed GIS course curriculum and has taught GIS to students and professionals with diverse academic backgrounds since the early nineties. Asher Soldwedel

Asher Soldwedel is an Auburn University graduate (BME), with many years of experience in graphic design, information technology, and project management. He joined the VPT Lab in 2000 and serves as the financial officer, IT manager and Coordinator of the VPT Professional Development Program. He has also been involved as the lead or collaborator on projects related to the design and development of interactive web pages for local government agencies, non-profit agencies and community based organizations. |
Aubrey Craun
Web Developer

Aubrey Craun has a Bachelor's degree in Architecture from FAU. He is be primarily responsible for creating and maintaining the Web site content for the College and its academic units, and to keep up with changing technical standards and university. Aubrey has also worked with individual faculty, researchers and student associations such as FAPS on a range of related interactive web design projects. He is happy to help wherever he can. |
Christine Mitchell
Graduate Research Assistant

Christine Mitchell is a second year graduate student who joined the team with a background in Environmental Studies and Geography. Her areas of expertise include disaster and vulnerability assessment, relief and mitigation; livelihood sustainability and environmental security; research methods including monitoring and evaluation; and environmental and social impact assessments. Previous to joining SURP she spent time working in the Southern Africa region in development, livelihood security, disaster mitigation, and vulnerability. Christine's primary assignment is a reserach assistant for the NSF funded study on Population Displacement Due to Catastrophic Hurricanes. |
Joann Skaria
Graduate Research Assistant

Joann Skaria is a 2nd year Excellence in Planning Student. Originally from a suburb of Philadelphia, PA, she graduated in 2008 from the Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College of FAU in Jupiter and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts, with a concentration in Environmental Studies. Her interests lie in sustainable community development, transportation planning, ecosystem protection and public parks and recreation. As a part of her undergraduate experience, Joann did internships with the Robert J. Huckshorn Arboretum on the Jupiter Campus of FAU, as well as the Pine Jog Environmental Education Center in West Palm Beach. She is also interested in photography, and extended this interest to an independent study of environmental photography during her senior year of her undergraduate experience. As a first year graduate student, Joann worked with Dr. Praveen Maghelal on research involving community health and safety, as well as a large scale Broward County transportation planning research project in collaboration with the Broward County Metropolitan Planning Organization, along with several other regional agencies. Joann is very excited to have recently joined the Visual Planning Technology Lab staff, and will now be working with Dr. Ann Margaret Esnard on several research projects, including the expansion of the US Geological Survey’s Ecosystem Portfolio Model for planning purposes. |
Florentina Hutt

Florentina Hutt is a 1st year Excellence in Planning student with a Bachelor’s degree in Urban Design from the University of Architecture and Urban Design, Bucharest, Romania. Florentina is working as a research assistant to Dr. Ann-Margaret Esnard. She has a background and interest in the graphic representation and visual communicationof data within the urban design and planning field. Adding to her extensive knowledge of Adobe and CADD software, she will now be working towards mastering and applying a variety of software: Visio, ArcGIS and Sketchup to create visual models that better show the complexity of the built environment. |
Nick Sofoul
Graduate Research Assistant

Nicholas Sofoul is a first year Excellence in Planning student with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from the University of Central Florida. Nick gained valuable ArcGIS experience at UCF through a sequence courses that emphasized GIS applications in environmental planning. Likewise, Nick is adept in a variety of applications including change detection; least cost path; suitability, network, and viewshead analyses. As a Research Assistant in the VPT Lab, Nick will be instrumental to the learning and application of PCensus Demographic software. This software will give students and faculty an easier method of conducting demographic analysis or incorporating demographic data into their own research. Additionally, Nick will assist with the organization and updating of the Lab’s data repository. Nick’s own research interests include GIS applications, transportation planning, and sustainable development. |
