The North Fork of the New River is one of three distinct basins which comprise the historical New River in Broward County, Florida (the other two being the South Fork and the main New River). Of the three basins, the North Fork is the one that still remains in its original, natural state with a large area of natural shoreline still existing. The North Fork community is comprised of mainly African-American families who started to migrate toward the area back in the early 1900s from Georgia, northern Florida, and the Bahamas. Today the African-American population generates 94 - 97 percent of the total population of the North Fork community.
