Kids Ecology Corps

The Kids Ecology Corps is a non-profit organization with the mission to inspire young people to make Environmental Action part of their everyday lives and in the lives of those around them.

KEC educates about 10,000 young people each year about the simple actions they can take to care for our Earth. Since its creation, The Kids Ecology Corps has reached over 52,000 young people from pre-k through high school and college. We perform a unique service. No other organization in Southeast Florida covers the broad spectrum of environmental issues we offer in face to face presentations. Our programs cover such current environmental topics as: habitat restoration, water conservation, pollution prevention, garbage reduction and recycling, the importance of urban forests and the condition of our oceans.

North Fork Project

The Kids Ecology Corps partnered with the South Florida Water Management District to raise the awareness and appreciation of our children for the North Fork of the New River - one of the last vestiges of the Everglades in urban Broward County. To encourage youngsters to learn more about and care for this community treasure, the Kids Ecology Corps developed 4 comprehensive learning modules about history, local wildlife, native plants and habitats and pollution of the North Fork. These materials were used in local elementary schools, aftercare programs and YMCA of Broward County. After the presentation, all students were invited to participate in an art-contest. Selected artwork has been displayed in the “2006 North Fork – The Great Treasure Hunt” Calendar.

As part of KEC's eco-action program, North Fork Elementary School and Pope John Paul II High School students participated in raising Red Mangroves to be used to restore natural habitats in this area. In May 2006, in partnership with The City of Fort Lauderdale, the same students planted those small Mangroves along a canal of the North Fork. It was not only a fun project, it taught the students a life long lesson: you can make a difference!
