Sistrunk Historical & Environmental Preservation Board

The Sistrunk Historical and Nature Preservation Society (SHNPS) is an organization of community residents and concerned citizens committed to restoring and preserving the natural beauty of the North Fork of the New River and the wildlife and vegetation that comprises the river’s ecosystem.  SHNPS also seeks to educate community residents to The North Fork of the New River’s history and the benefits derived from conserving it as an urban waterway to be enjoyed and protected.  By convening community forums, residents are kept informed and up-to-date on preservation efforts.  Through intergovernmental cooperation, meaningful partnerships have been developed with governments at all levels to meet the goal of a resplendent and pristine river to be enjoyed by future generations.

The Sistrunk and Nature Preservation Society is committed to:

  • Restoring the river to its original pristine state.
  • Educating community residents to the river’s history.
  • Advising residents of any potential health risks caused by poor water quality.
  • Identifying funding opportunities to help beautify and maintain the river.
  • Preserving the river as an integral and unique component of the northwest community.
  • Promoting intergovernmental cooperation to achieve organization’s goals.
