The North Fork of the New River Pocket Park Standards Design Plan examined the potential for the development of pocket parks along the North Fork of the New River with the intention of promoting enhanced neighborhood awareness and proprietorship of the estuary and its ecology.  Analysis and consideration of the river system were done with a view toward the whole North Fork system including the Southern most length below Broward.

Two maps that indicate the site context and the approximate location of potential sites and a network study were developed in order to examine the potential for a continuous pedestrian path along the waterway.  Access points were selected with careful consideration of accessibility, public and private adjacencies, economic impact, and the overall benefit of the neighborhoods.

It was established that despite the relatively even spacing of the access ways, the development of pedestrian ways and/or bridges was needed to encourage accessibility from both sides of the river.  The potential for a continuous path was best from Sunrise down to Delevoe Park.  The connection south to Broward Boulevard (and beyond) was not as direct, partly to the intersection of I-95 and was going to require a significant diversion to adjacent streets and/or redevelopment of the river edge.

After examining several potential access points along the North Fork of the New River the study concluded that ten places were best suited for future development of pocket parks.  In order to explore a range of design intentions; schematic designs were developed for six of the ten sites.

The North Fork of the New River Pocket Park Standards Design Plan was developed for and in cooperation with Broward Urban River Trails.  Funding for this organization was provided in part by the Broward County Board of County Commissioners as recommended by the Broward Cultural Affairs Council.  The project designers were:  Aron Temkin (principal), Margi Glavovic Nothard, Walter Wernecke, Ralph Johnson, and Jaap Vos.
