The SFWMD, under contract with the City of Fort Lauderdale, will eliminate existing septic tanks and their associated drainfields, reducing the potential for introducing domestic waste, household chemicals and other potential contaminants into the river as well as the area groundwater. This partnership also calls for removing an existing sanitary sewer main that crosses over the North Fork of the New River at Northwest 18th Avenue.
This project should improve water quality in the river and adjacent waterways as well help protect ground water, which supplies most of south Florida's drinking water.
